Parent-Teen Discussion Aids

How to Use the Parents Care DAPT Kit in Your Own Home:

1. Review the DAPT Kit and discuss how to use it with your spouse or partner. It is very important that the adults agree on how to best utilize the kit’s contents and that you speak with one voice – do not send mixed messages to your teen.

2. Parents should familiarize themselves with the DAPT Kit’s contents.
   – Review all of the enclosed information.
   – Read the “Just Say No” book. Download the PowerPoint discussion guide as an alternative or supplement to the book.
   – Review the product instructions to make sure you know how to administer the breathalyzer and various drug screen-tests if ever needed.
   – Review the sample Teen/Parent contract and outline what privileges and consequences are most appropriate for your family situation.

3. Plan your Parent Care DAPT Kit discussion with your teen.
   – Choose a time and a place where interruptions and distractions can be minimized.
   – Allow enough time to achieve your objectives.
   – Let them know that you are having this discussion because you love them.
   – Review the “Just Say No” book and/ or PowerPoint presentation together and, if appropriate, have your teen read parts of the book that you have highlighted or marked.
   – Discuss the Teen/Parent contract’s meaning and obligations.
If desired, make the contract a family declaration/obligation.
Discuss together and fill out the privileges and consequences portion of the contract and sign the contract.

4. Keep an eye on your teen and if they are exhibiting behaviors that cause you to think they may have used tobacco, alcohol or drugs, if appropriate for your family, then exercise your option of administering the breathalyzer or appropriate drug screen test.

5. Review and revise Teen/Parent contract as necessary as your child matures and purchase more testing resources to keep them up to date and at the ready. Visit us at www.parentscarekit.com for more in- depth discussions.

6. Do not make the fact that you have purchased the Parents Care DAPT Kit a secret. Discuss the kit with your school acquaintances, friends and neighbors. Suggest they also purchase a Parents Care DAPT Kit. The more of your teen’s friends who are also operating under similar expectations the less peer pressure there will be to engage in unhealthy behaviors.
